Monday, July 7, 6:30pm - PLEASANTVILLE
(1998) dir. Gary Ross w/ Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon,
William H. Macy, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels [124 minutes]
Socially
alienated David, played by Tobey Maguire, escapes his less than perfect
life by immersing himself, and his popular sister Jennifer, played
by Reese Witherspoon, in the squeaky-clean 1950¹s black and white
television show "Pleasantville." The siblings are quick
to learn that their television existence collides with their own modern
day sensibilities, changing both them and their town in the process.
Joan Allen delivers a stunning performance as an unhappy housewife,
and William H. Macy and Jeff Daniels are there to help her find happiness
and a new sense of self along the way.
Monday,
July 14, 6:30pm - LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL - PG-13
(1997) dir. Roberto
Benigni w/ Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Giorgio Cantarini 116
minutes] In Italian with English subtitles.
Set in 1930s
Italy, playful and charming Guido, played by Roberto Benigni, woos
the beautiful Dora, played by Nicoletta Braschi, in the most comical
and adorable of ways - ultimately winning her heart. Fast forward
to five years later, the two are married and have a son. Interrupting
their seemingly perfect life is the invasion of the Nazis, who take
Guido and his son away to the concentration camps. In the midst of
all the horror of the camp, Guido struggles to keep his son safe by
inventing a ploy where the camp becomes a complicated game, with points
to be won, and the grand prize for winning is an army tank. Funny,
heartbreaking and bittersweet, this story is not one to be missed.
